Another month of awesome reads!

Hey! Check out my review tower!

Haha. Just kidding. It's really not as bad as this, but it sure feels like it. I love to read, and I will read pretty much anything that sounds remotely interesting. As a result, I feel like I have a never ending tower waiting for me.

My goal for the remainder of the year is to tackle through all my review copies with a vengeance and start clean in January. Fingers crossed that I am successful. Though I think I am being unrealistic.

Working a full time job, and taking two very heavy part time business courses is taking its toll on me. I love blogging and want to keep the momentum going. Erin is expecting her first bundle of joy very soon so she may be a bit more absent until she establishes a routine. So for the moment, we are not taking in any more review requests.

November is jam packed for the first two weeks with lots of awesome blog tours. I always try to keep up the blog banners on the side bar in case you guys are curious on what is coming up.

For my reading list, outside of the ones being reviewed for the tours, I have some pretty interesting reads and reviews coming up. Check out some of the titles below that I am looking forward to escaping into for the month! Hopefully I will be able to tackle a few more.

Author Review Requests:

Chalk Valley
Nightscapes: Tales of Dark Fantasy

This Scarlet CordBeautiful Disaster (Beautiful, #1)

Immanion Press:

Song of the Sulh

I know it's pretty diverse, but then I have always been a really diverse reader!

Feel free to pop in and leave comments. We love hearing from you guys.

Happy Reading!

Creepy Itty Bitties!

It has been an awesome month filled with creepy, or downright scary reads and lots of giveaways. Thank you all for visiting and participating, and congratulations to all of our winners this month!

Leaving the month of October with just one short story itty bittie! November is super packed, so I had to start my November reads this past week. Not to mention, need to catch up on a couple of reads that I really wanted to get to but wasn't able to fit into October like I hoped.

Happy Reading, and Happy Halloween!!!

Lily's Review of The Zombie Generation, by Drake Vaughn

The Zombie Generation

Warner is the sole survivor of a deathscape dominated by hordes of the undead. Years of isolation and lack of any human contact has driven him to the brink of insanity. Plagued with vivid hallucinations and shocking nightmares, he scours the deadlands for any signs of life. While discovering a temporary cure for his creeping mental illness, Warner is attacked and infected with the deadly disease. Switching between man and beast, he must decide on risking a desperate cure or attempting a suicidal quest to rescue a group of stranded survivors. Worse, these survivors may only be a figment of his crumbling sanity. The Zombie Generation is a terrifying tale, perfect for fans of horror and the flesh guzzling undead.

My Rating:

I came to understand, fairly early in this novel, that this was not a typical zombie story. In fact, the scary monsters in this story can't really be described as conventional zombies, or zombies at all. At least not the typical image that the word 'zombie' brings to mind. I even felt a little cheated to have had the impression going into this story with a different perception of which this novel did not deliver. But there was much about this novel that was original and interesting.

This was strange novella for me. There was a difficult tone to this story that was hard to figure out.

Lily's Review of The Zombie Always Knocks Twice, by E. Van Lowe

The Zombie Always Knocks Twice (Hollyweird, #1)

Hollywood, California, is known for swimming pools, movie stars…and now the risen dead.

Hollywood can be a difficult place to grow up, especially if you’re Kristine Golden, a fifteen-year-old necromancer with a sworn duty to lay the risen dead back to rest and no desire to be in the movie business.

When handsome deadie Alex Romero swaggers into her life, Kris must keep her promise, despite her growing feelings for him. If that’s not enough to give a girl a headache, a murderous zombie comes knocking at Kris’s door, rocking her world and threatening her family.

Can Kris solve the mystery of the rampaging zombie before someone else winds up dead? Or will the walking dead take over Hollywood and turn it into…Hollyweird?

Erin's Itty Bitty Review of What Alice Saw, by Bridget Squires

A tale of domestic abuse and the result of a woman pushed too far seen through the eyes of a child. The story is for all those women out there who are suffering and feel as if they may break down one day. Don't, walk away before it gets to that point.

My Rating:

This is a sad, sad book!!  I picked this book up from Smashwords because it was a quick read and when reading the synopsis I felt a bit of an emotional pull.

The story was told well, it grasped me from the very beginning.  The characters were well developed for a short story.  The author made me feel an emotional connection to the woman, and hate the man with all the hate I could possibly brew up.

Although this is technicially just a saddens me to know that there are thousands of people out there who are suffering and dealing with this exact situation.  Only a lot of these people don't have the guts to do what this woman did.  She broke down and did something that she won't regret, but that likely got her in a bit of trouble.

I would highly recommend this book to any person who is suffering and being abused by anyone.  Please remember there is help for you, and you need to get out before the situation escalates and something terrible happens.

Lily's Review of The Black Isle, by Sandi Tan

The Black Isle

There are ghosts on the Black Isle.
Ghosts that no one can see.
No one...except Cassandra.

Uprooted from Shanghai with her father and twin brother, young Cassandra finds the Black Isle's bustling, immigrant-filled seaport, swampy jungle, and grand rubber plantations a sharp contrast to the city of her childhood. And she soon makes another discovery: the Black Isle is swarming with ghosts.

Taking readers from the 1920s, through the Japanese occupation during WWII, to the Isle's radical transformation into a gleaming cosmopolitan city, THE BLACK ISLE is a sweeping epic--a deeply imagined, fiercely original tale from a vibrant new voice in fiction.

Lily's Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it (my current rating) really liked it it was amazing

To say that this is one of the darkest novels I have ever read is not saying enough. This story IS DARK!! And though very intriguing and mystical, also incredibly depressing.

Though I try not to do this as a rule, I did browse some of the reviews  on Goodreads for this title. There was a real mixture of reactions which made me even more curious to read this. Some readers were really turned off by some of the content, such as scenes of incest, and some bestiality. For that alone, some dropped the novel.  And when they were talking of bestiality, we are talking about an octopus rising to the occasion (pun very much intended).

Seriously guys...

An octopus....

Creepy Itty Bitties! - Short story Reviews

Cinderella and Zombies
Book Blurb From: Goodreads
Author: Emily Casey
Publication Date: May 6, 2012
Kindle Edition: 73 pages

"More than anything, King Richard feared the zombie outbreak. Now, they neared his palace with every passing day, in growing numbers. One thing was clear to the King: his son must marry a zombie-killer."

What happens when you take a classic fairy tale and add a few zombies to it? Cinderella goes from being a pretty-faced pushover to being the best zombie-slayer in the kingdom. But will that be enough when she's decked out in a ball gown and glass slippers?

Lily's Rating: didn't like it it was ok liked it really liked it (my current rating) it was amazing

This story was kick ass. I really liked it. So far, I have been very lucky with fairy tale re-tellings, with or without the zombie factor.

Lily's review of The Ravenous Dead, by Natasha Hoar

The Ravenous Dead (Lost Souls, #2)

This time the dead are hungry…

Rachel Miller doesn't just see dead people, she rescues them. As a member of The Order of Rescue Mediums, she spends most of her time helping stubborn spirits move on from the world. But after she learns the details of three brutal murders, she knows the culprit can only be a reaper, an undead monster that relentlessly stalks its victims to feed on their souls.

Lily's Rating: 3 of 5 stars false

I was approved for this read on Netgalley, and excited to start it. I love the cover, and the synopsis.  No idea though, that this was part of a series, and 'The Ravenous Dead' was book 2. So when I realized that, I was a bit disappointed and apprehensive.  I HATE reading series out of order. But I just didn't have the time to go looking of the first book to read it first for this month, so I started it.

It's 1160 BC. As great herds of these walking corpses invade ancient Israel, four must stand against the dead. Devora, who sees what God sees. The slave girl Hurriya. Zadok, a legend among warriors. And the widower Barak, fighting to keep his vineyard free of this new peril.

Devora is no stranger to the unclean dead. As a child, she heard her mother’s shrieks as the ravenous dead pulled her from the tent. And it was Devora's hand that ended her mother's restless hunger the next morning.

Now Devora has made an uneasy alliance with those she fears most among the living. But can they stand together? For the living fear each other—fear the strangers in the land—as much as they fear the hungry dead.

Erin's Review of Shattered Visions, Haunted Memories By Reyna Hawk

Just when Janie thought she had all she ever dreamt, the powers that be would suddenly change her course; throwing Janie head long into a world of uncertainty and casting a puzzling shadow on all this life she’d grown to love. Janie would soon discover nothing in her world was what it appeared. Leaving her confused, broken, and determined to find the answers in a new but familiar realm filled with secrets and deception. Memories and turbulence lead Janie on her quest to discover the truth concerning herself, her past, the Petrilo crime family, and her brother’s murder.

Is Rico's unfinished business in Cherokee to finish the hit the Petrilos put on her? Is Malachi willing to take a bullet for his new love; or will he walk away from the danger and free himself of the drama Janie has brought to his once peaceful life? Love and deceit will lead them all to the truth.

The last book in the Valentine/Petrilo series was by far my favourite!  A few days ago I finished the second in the series and wrote this review about it.  I am happy to report the confusion I wrote about was all dealt with in this book!

Erin`s Review of Reflection of Secrets, by Reyna Hawk

Janie had high hopes of getting her life on the right path and freedom from the Petrilo Crime Family, but more tragedies and startling revelations send her plans right out the window. Janie's past trouble and sadness lurk back from the shadows. The beautiful life Janie has come to love takes a turn leading her right back to where she started in the clutches of the Petrilos. Will Janie survive another go around with the organized crime family?

I received this novel by the author for an honest review.  After reading the first book in the series I couldn`t say no!  See our dual review for the first book `Looking through Blind Eyes` here!

Well...let me explain my rating right away because as I go on in this review you are going to be confused as to why I didn't rate this one higher...I have to say my rating is a 3.5 out of 5.  I really liked it, and the only reason I didn't give it a 4 is because I was SOOOOO confused towards the end...
