Lily's Review of The Language of Souls, by Lena Goldfinch

The Language of Souls

Book Synopsis from

Solena, a young healer with a generous heart, is desperate to heal her dying grandfather. When she ventures into hostile territory to find a rare herb, she finds out just how much she’s risked when she’s captured by the enemy and accused of being a spy.

As a soldier, Rundan has struggled all his life to please his father, a ruthless army commander, but when he’s ordered to take the beautiful trespasser to the royal courts, where she’ll be summarily tried and executed, he’s plagued by the most inconvenient desire to protect her.

Though terrified and anxious to escape, Solena is confused by the handsome young soldier who cruelly captures her and then displays uncommon kindness. When he risks his own life to save hers, she discovers she may have risked more than her life… she may have lost her heart.

Lily's Rating:

This is a beautiful tale of two young people that do not fit the mold of their very different societies, who meet through the most unromantic of circumstances.

Solena is brave, reckless and will do anything to help her ailing adoptive grandfather. Knowing he doesn't have much time left, she embarks on a mission to gather herbs she needs in order to brew a concoction her grandfather so desperately needs in order to survive. Predictably, once in enemy territory, where this herb grows, she is captured. What wasn't so predictable is how feisty she is, and how aggressively she fights to escape the clutches of her enemy... if unsuccessfully.

Rundan feels like he doesn't belong in the garb of a soldier, but must follow in his father's footsteps, though nothing seems to make him proud. His father is a brute man, and the very type of character that Solena's people fear. Ruthless, hard, and unmoving. So it is no surprise that when Rundan captures this girl, his father quickly brands her a spy. But Rundan is drawn to Solena and wants to protect her. His desire to be something else entirely than what is expected of him takes them both on a journey of discovery and the heartwarming story of how two different people, who can barely communicate with each other, find love.

This story was very heartwarming, and left me with a happy fuzzy feeling. Though there wasn't much that kept me guessing, it was a quick interesting read. Love hits you on all levels till you are dizzy. Solena's love for her grandfather, her best friend, and her immense sacrifice to save her captor's life brought a little shimmer to my eyeballs. And I truly enjoyed reading how two strangers, from two completely different worlds that could barely communicate initially learned to love and respect each other along their journey.

Though they were both so different, in cultures and appearance, this story drives home how in our cores, we believe in so much that is the same. The last scene of this novel took my breath away at how simple and extraordinarily romantic it was.
