Notorious pirate Barren Reed has one thing on his mind: Revenge against the man who killed his father. So kidnapping his enemy’s fiancĂ© seems a perfect plan…until he actually does it.

Larkin Lee is more than a pretty face and fiancĂ© to a powerful man. Her fierce personality is enough to make any pirate want to push her overboard.

But when the King of the Orient comes to Barren with a task—to find the Bloodstone, a powerful gem thought only to exist in legend, Barren sees another opportunity to destroy his enemy. Together, Barren, Larkin and a crew of pirates set off to find the stone, only to discover it caused the death of Barren’s own mother and Larkin’s, too. As his  strongest allies turn into his greatest enemies, and the life of the girl he kidnapped becomes more important than he ever dreamed, Barren’s quest for revenge becomes a fight to save the Orient.

Are you kidding me?

This is a debut novel, folks.

This novel was good enough to kick my man out of the house to go on a boy's night, just so I could have a few hours of uninterrupted reading time.

I don't remember the last time I read a good pirate novel. Heck... I don't even remember if I have EVER read a pirate novel. But I was in the mood for such an adventure, and I threw my name in for this one.  I am always open to read different books, but for some reason, I was really excited to read this one.

Ashley Dixon definitely delivered.  Though this is kind of outside my usual genres, I was totally engrossed in this novel from the start. It's action packed from the get go.  Barren Reed is thirsty for revenge, and the moment Larkin puts up a heck of a fight during his kidnapping attempt, I was rubbing my hands with glee.

I love strong female 'wenches' and Larkin had lots of fire.  She was far from just a pretty face, and for that I am glad.  Barren was sigh worthy, yet not given to romantic fancies.  He is pretty cold, and at times, surprisingly immature and hasty. But as the plot thickens, and Larkin begins to understand that all is not what she has been led to believe by her father... both of them begin to look at the other a little differently.

The world building was great. The characters well fleshed out. As fast and action packed as the beginning of this was, there was a noticeable slow down once the hunt for the bloodstone began.  I did find, however, that some of the slow paced moments did contribute to the plot and character richness of this story, so I didn't mind so much.  Once the opposing forces collided in this quest and the race really kicked up a notch, it was a flurry of activity. Though it seemed that, all of a sudden, there was way too much going on and my head was spinning from it all, it was thrilling.

This really was a true epic adventure. It had every element to keep you glued to such a novel, if you enjoy this sort of plot.  From sword fights, to romance, and even a few quite comedic moments, it was difficult to put down, and even more difficult not to enjoy.

Giveaway Time!

Ashley was born and raised in Oklahoma, where the wind really does sweep down the plains, and horses and carriages aren’t used as much as she’d like. When she’s not writing, she’s hard at work on her Master’s degree in Library Science and Information Technology, working out, or pretending she’s Sherlock Holmes. Her obsession with writing began after reading the Lord of the Rings in the eighth grade. Since then, she’s loved everything Fantasy–resulting in an unhealthy obsession with the ‘geek’ tab on Pinterest, where all things awesome go.
