From the New York Times bestselling author of The Secret Keeper comes a “moody, suspenseful page-turner” (People, Best Book Pick) filled with mystery and spellbinding secrets.
Living on her family’s idyllic lakeside estate in Cornwall, England, Alice Edevane is a bright, inquisitive, and precociously talented sixteen-year-old who loves to write stories.
One midsummer’s eve, after a beautiful party drawing hundreds of guests to the estate has ended, the Edevanes discover that their youngest child, eleven-month-old Theo, has vanished without a trace. He is never found, and the family is torn apart, the house abandoned.
Decades later, Alice is living in London, having enjoyed a long successful career as a novelist. Miles away, Sadie Sparrow, a young detective in the London police force, is staying at her grandfather’s house in Cornwall. While out walking one day, she stumbles upon the old Edevane estate—now crumbling and covered with vines. Her curiosity is sparked, setting off a series of events that will bring her and Alice together and reveal shocking truths about a past long gone...yet more present than ever.
A lush, atmospheric tale of intertwined destinies from a masterful storyteller, The Lake House is an enthralling, thoroughly satisfying read.
Kate Morton quickly became a favorite author of mine the moment I started her novel ‘The Secret Keeper’. I had the great opportunity to get ‘The Lake House’ to read from Netgalley, and I thank the publisher and author for the chance to do so in exchange for an honest review.
As with the other novels that I have read, Kate Morton weaves yet again another intricate mystery. In this novel, it revolves around the disappearance of a baby boy, Theo. Detective Sadie Sparrow stumbles upon this unsolved disappearance while staying with her grandfather, and quickly becomes obsessed with the case. Eventually, her obsession leads her and the reader to find out what no other member of the police force or the Edevane family members found – what actually happened to Theo Edevane that night.
Kate Morton’s superb storytelling and character building did what not many authors do to me. And that is…. Stump me. As I followed along this intricate storyline filled with clues and theories, every theory of Sparrow’s and my own were disproved, much our joint disappointment. It took every ounce of strength in me not to fall into my worst reading habit – paging ahead to see what happens! I knew that if I stuck it out and followed the journey along as I was supposed to, that the reveal would be worth it.
And was it ever.
However, the story felt like it dragged on a bit, and I found myself skimming a lot, especially through the dialogue.
Another great story that makes me want to continue recommending this author to my friends and family. Kate Morton spun another great tale of mystery, filled with plot twists that left me breathless and guessing at every turn.
