Beg for Mercy, by Shannon Dermott - Review & Giveaway - A Supagurl Tour

Good morning, fellow readers! Welcome to the 'Beg for Mercy' Review blog tour stop. We also have a giveaway at the end of this post, so don't miss out! I just recently got a copy of the second novel in this series which I am excited to tackle. Thank you so much Shannon Dermott, for generously passing me a copy of each to read.

Beg for Mercy (Cambion, #1)

Everyone dreams of that first kiss. Of that magic moment when your lips finally meet those of that special person you’ve waited your whole life for. A little awkward, a little scary, a little hot and every bit amazing. We speculate that the whole world will shake and time will just stop. No one, however, ever imagines that kiss would be lethal.

Sixteen year old
Mercy Moore's life got more than just complicated. The kiss that originally could have meant she would finally have a boyfriend, now was the kiss that could have very nearly ended his life. A small detail her mother conveniently never told her will take her life for an abrupt u-turn. Dating, no love, was now completely and utterly impossible.

But life, however cruel, goes on. Far too soon for her taste,
Mercy finds herself at a party with the elite students of her school and her best friend. And of all things, playing a stupid game that could very well mean the death of someone in that small room. If it were not for her best friend, the hottest guys in school, and a small need to fit in, she may have been able to escape the disaster that was to come. Her worst nightmare, her personal curse, her very life, only gets dangerously worse.

 My Rating:

Wow. This sucks. You kiss a guy. He almost dies. Your mom tells you that you are a succubus and can't kiss a guy ever again. For a teenage girl hearing that, the world should feel like it's coming to an end.  And I don't blame Mercy for feeling that way at all.

Especially when all of a sudden, a few years after her first incident, she has not one guy, not two guys, but four guys that are chasing her around!
What do you call a love triangle with more than two guys? Definitely not a love triangle.... A love square? Talk about irony.

You can kill a man with a kiss, and everywhere you turn, there are men wanting to kiss you.
But that's not all!
There is a serial murderer or something on the loose. It becomes a big deal around Mercy. And everyone wants to protect her. Exciting stuff! But there was little focus on these crimes, so I didn't quite comprehend why it became such a focus to protect Mercy specifically from this culprit. It's all explained at the end, so not to worry. But the dots were not connecting really well on this part for me, until I got there.
Ok, so... usually when I read about multiple boys wanting the same girl, I either have a bad feeling about one, or I like them both and feel sorry for the one that gets the shaft, but usually I understand the author's pick of the litter for our female protagonist. In this case... All 4 are pretty cool guys. Ya, one is a little arrogant, but once you figure out what he is all about, you want to hold him, soothe him and fawn over him. Mercy's main interest is as nice and angelic as can be, with a few deep secrets that you can't even begin to guess at till closer to the end. Then you have the token best friend that appears to have moved on with his life, but deep down he is still a love sick puppy hoping for an opportunity and you almost wish Mercy would wake up and say, "Oh my gosh, what am I doing? I have loved you all along!" and they live happily ever after.  Boy #4 is the anomaly. He appears, for all intents and purposes, to be the bad boy everyone should run from. You are never really sure what, or who he is, and whether he has the best intentions. But he is hot as hell, and very very deep in his unfeeling, unemotional eyes you see that he can and will be redeemed, if only Mercy gives in.
And to make things even worse in the deciding factor! They are all HOT! Why didn't I have this issue in highschool, I wonder???

Hmmm maybe it would have helped not going to an all girls school, but that's besides the point!

Oh Mercy. What to do, what to do....
Overall, I really enjoyed this story, though there were a little hiccups. If you are a stickler for editing, there were some punctuation issues that were reoccurring throughout the novel in excess, so I definitely let the writer know that needs a little tweaking. But rest assured, there is help coming as our author is aware and hoping her new editor does a good job ironing these little things out.
I am so glad that she gifted me the second in the series so I could continue this story. I hope that Mercy can work out all of her different dilemmas, of which there are many, not including finding out the full scope of what she is, what she can do, and how she can control it.  Maybe her mother will be more open to educate her daughter and not hold so many secrets and information back on the second novel. Protecting your kid sometimes is better served when you are fully open with them about who their daddy is and what he can do!

You want to get in on this? Don't leave the page till you check out the giveaway below. This is a pretty fun YA novel, with a huge cast of very interesting characters. The second novel, 'Waiting for Mercy' is out, and if you enjoy the first like I did, you don't have to wait to continue with Mercy's journey of discovery and love.

*I received a eBook copy of this book for free to review from the author; this in no way influenced my review, all opinions are 100% honest and my own.*
