Book Review & a Giveaway - The Forgotten Ones, by Laura Howard

I grabbed a copy of 'The Forgotten Ones' prior to this tour and was just starting to read it when I saw the tour announcement. Since I was planning to review it anyways, I was happy to jump on board for this tour. But as part of this tour stop, there is a giveaway that you don't want to miss. You can enter at the end of this post.  You can also check out the tour schedule and follow the tour! The Forgotten Ones
Series: The Danaan Trilogy #1
Author: Laura Howard
Release Date: April 30, 2013

Purchase: Amazon  / B & N

Allison O’Malley’s plan is to go to grad school so she can get a good job and take care of her schizophrenic mother. She has carefully closed herself off from everything else, including a relationship with Ethan, who she’s been in love with for as long as she can remember.

What is definitely not part of the plan is the return of her long-lost father, who claims he can bring Allison’s mother back from the dark place her mind has gone. Allison doesn’t trust her father, so why would she believe his stories about a long forgotten Irish people, the Tuatha de Danaan? But truths have a way of revealing themselves. Secrets will eventually surface. And Allison must learn to set aside her plan and work with her father if there is even a small chance it could restore her mother’s sanity.

The cover of this novel attracted me immediately, and the book blurb more so. This was a fae story that I was really looking forward to. Being able to receive a copy during a free promotion on Priceless.

This was a fast and entertaining read, with contemporary and fantasy elements that will appeal to a lot of readers that enjoy both these genres.  Interesting characters, and an intriguing mystery of what caused Allison's mother's condition. The sudden appearance of Allison's father shifts the story in a very different direction than how it started, but promises to answer some very critical questions about Allison and the other half of her parentage.

Though not as fast paced in the beginning, it became a lot more interesting once Allison ventures into the world her father comes from. And even though the transition of contemporary to fantasy wasn't as smooth as I wanted it to be, it was still a memorable story, with an interesting ending that makes me eager to continue the series.

Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.
