After the 1st wave, only darkness remains. After the 2nd, only the lucky escape. And after the 3rd, only the unlucky survive. After the 4th wave, only one rule applies: trust no one.

Now, it’s the dawn of the 5th wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

I imagine that alien invasions would suck. Unless you are one that clings to the belief that aliens will come upon us in peace and for the purposes of enlightening our race.

I say "Bullshit" to that.

That scenario would surprise me more than hostile extraterrestrials showing themselves and blasting us to eternity and beyond.

Rick Yancey took me on one such scary journey with his novel, The 5th Wave.  And if you are like me, and fear the idea, but most importantly - you like to read and be scared with this idea... you need to read this.

Cassie is one strong chick. As young as she is, she has great instincts. Great enough to keep her surviving and in one piece as long as she has. Kudos to this girl. I would only hope to be as resourceful as her if this scenario ever became reality... speaking of reality, I probably wouldn't last remotely as long as she has. And honestly, I am not sure if I would want to. Each wave is scarier and more brutal than the next... and you never know when it's coming or what is in store for you. Who do you even trust, when the enemy wears your face?

The idea of an invasion, tens or hundreds of years in the making is one very creepy thought.  That they imbed themselves in your subconscious mind, or your unborn babies... growing inside you as you go through life oblivious to their presence. Until the time is right, and they awaken at the right moment, with full awareness of their mission.

I could have crapped my pants, but there is plenty of action in this book to keep my mind off my churning insides.  And since there isn't enough goodness within its pages (sarcasm - there is plenty of goodness), let's throw a little forbidden romance in there too for good measure.

Seriously... this novel was good. What sucks is waiting until May 2014 to continue this story. You know what sucks even more? Waiting until 2015 for Book 3.

Thank god for a ridiculous long list of books to read in between. May 2014 should be here in no time!
