One look at the book cover, and that alone was enough to make me salivate for this book.  But even I didn't realize how disturbing this novel was actually going to be.  You like a novel that makes you bite your nails until you bleed? This is it.

Good horror novels are hard to come by these days. At least for me. I have read most of what Stephen King has to offer. I have read so many Dean Koontz novels, that I sometimes have read one twice because I have forgotten that I already read it.  And John Saul? Wow, from the first few pages of 'Nathaniel', I was a fan and read everything he published.

This was a great horror novel.

'Night Chill' by Jeff Gunhus gave me the willies. As I read through Jack's hospital demonic hallucination, I immediately knew that this was going to be intense. Not to mention - very disturbing.  That scene was really just the beginning.  A couple of scenes actually made me feel slightly ill. There is no subtlety in Gunhus' imagery, and no holding back.  He starts the novel intensely, and holds on to that level of suspense throughout, barely giving you a moment to breathe and calm the heart rate. I was tense the whole time reading this book, and unable to put it down for long.  It was the reason for the nightmares I had for a couple of nights.

Gunhus definitely has a gift.  This story flowed flawlessly.  He gave me full bodied characters.  He made me not only feel intense emotions, but made the characters' emotions incredibly potent.  This was one of the darkest novels I have read all year.

In addition to writing supernatural thrillers for adults, Jeff Gunhus is also the author of the Middle Grade/YA series The Templar Chronicles. ( The first book, Jack Templar Monster Hunter, was written in an effort to get his reluctant reader eleven-year old son excited about reading. It worked and a new series was born and recognized as a 2012 Forward Reviews Book of the Year Finalist. Jeff has been a Stephen King and Dean Koontz fan since he was a kid reading their novels under the covers at night. Seeing Night Chill next to King and Koontz on the Amazon Bestseller lists has been a surreal experience. He leads an active lifestyle in Maryland with his wife Nicole and five incredible kids. In rare moments of quiet, he can be found in the back of the City Dock Cafe in Annapolis working on his next novel.

  1. Awesome review this sounds right up my alley with the creepiness and anything horror. On that note, I kinda fail that I haven't read any Stephen King books >.< I did watch his movies though. His books are like a million pages! O_O Anyways, glad you liked it, Lily! :)

    1. I skim through the exhausting King descriptions... I seem to prefer the movie/series adaptations myself.

This novel was really creepy though... I wouldn't recommend reading it at home alone... at night... right before bed.....

We love hearing from you so don't be shy!
