Book Review - Pooka in My Pantry (Monster Haven #2) by R.L. Naquin

Zoey Donovan—empath, wedding planner, go-to girl for monsters with personal problems—has been marked twice for pickup by Death. On both occasions, Riley the smoking-hot reaper has refused to follow through. For his breach of protocol, Riley is now on probation. For her refusal to die on schedule, Zoey's right to live is challenged. She will have to undergo a life-or-death trial, but she won't know when or where it will happen…

Staying alive might not be so difficult if the Leprechaun Mafia hadn't strolled into town. Now every business owner with the slightest connection to the supernatural community is being threatened with the most appalling bad luck if they don't pay up. Mirrors are smashed, bodies are dropping, and Zoey's still got clients waiting for fabric samples.

With a little luck, she might be able to save everyone and still have time for a second attempt at a decent first date with her favorite reaper.

This book is so much fun, which comes as no surprise since I really enjoyed the first one as well. You can read my review of “Monster in My Closet” here, which I read 6 years ago. If you are in the same position, don’t fret. I had no problem getting right back in the story. If you have not read the first in this series, may I just say, you are missing out! This series is mega fun!

Zoey is just as quirky and hilarious as in the first book. I mean, for someone that lived a normal life, to get thrown into this fantastic world that no one else around her sees or is aware of, and still manage to come out the other side slightly unscathed or worse for wear… well that is commendable. She takes it all in good stride. Even when she is riddled with bad luck she manages to figure out how to make it through the day, though I could almost literally feel her exhausted and exasperation.

She is pretty admirable though. Taking on the Leprechaun mafia, dealing with that messy, gross Pookah that won’t go away, while trying to get through another couple of disastrous dates with a Reaper should be overwhelming and yet she manages to puff out her chest and master every situation. She is my kind of girl!

Quirkiness and play aside, there are serious moments in this novel and some tragedies that were quite sad. As it was in the first book, there are serious baddies afoot, and someone is causing a lot of trouble for Zoey and her friends, and some of them did not come out of it in good shape.

Of course, I am being super vague in my review with the details because I am trying not to write any spoilers. Suffice it to say that I am ready to buy the next book in the series ASAP.

Happy Reading!

Many thanks to Netgalley, Authors and Publishers for making copies available for review. No compensation was accepted and my opinions are 100% my own.
